I want to become an existence that can spread smiles around the world!

Riku Nanase

Riku Nanase (七瀬陸(ななせりく)) has a cute and energetic disposition that belies how frail his body actually is. Despite that, he works hard to do what he can do, and doesn’t want to be a burden to others. Due to living most of his early life in and out of hospitals, there’s a lot Riku doesn’t quite know about the world, and his naivety often shows itself because he wears his heart on his sleeve.

Riku will often say things without thinking, and those things can be very VERY rude or otherwise insensitive. He’ll also forget about or overestimate his health in an attempt to not cause anyone worry, but this conversely has led him close to death’s door more than once.

In regard to how Riku was scouted, Riku was singing at a karaoke box with friends when Otoharu Takanashi suddenly came in. Riku thought that Otoharu had gotten the rooms mixed up and would turn around and leave, but instead he just stood there and asked Riku to start singing. After Riku finished singing, Otoharu started clapping by himself and passed Riku his business card. His friends all thought that he was being tricked.[1]

Given Name
  • 陸 (riku) = land; shore; six

陸 can be read as riku or roku, and roku is six. In part 3, Nagi once said that "IDOLiSH7 will still be complete even if I’m not in it" when he heard that Riku’s name has both six and seven in it.

FOR YOU: アイドリッシュセブンは1つ壁を乗り越えるとまた別の壁が現れるストーリー展開が魅力ですが、今回もみんなで困難に立ち向かっていきますので、その姿を楽しんでいただけたらと思います。
The way that IDOLiSH7 will surpass one wall and then immediately encounter another is one of the story's charms, but this time everyone will stand together to face the hardships, so I think you'll be able to enjoy seeing that side of the group's.

FOR RIKU: ようやく落ち着いてきたかなというか、やっと陸自身、地に足が着いてきたかなという感じがするので、「ここからまたスタートだな。頑張ろう!」
It sorta finally feels like he's calmed down, or more like Riku himself has found a place to stand*, so "this is another starting point. Let's do our best!"

  1. Translator Note: basically I had to speed-google this phrase because it literally translates to "he has attached to himself a leg to place on the ground" (that's not how it literally translates but that is literally how I originally read it) but basically I think it's like a combination of having a place to belong & having a strong sense of your standing? like having your feet planted firmly.

Trivia

  • When he was still in school, Riku received Valentines chocolate from a female friend of his, but he probably wasn’t aware that it was out of genuine sentiment. [2]
  • Riku has spent many New Year’s in hospitals. [3]
  • An unexpected habit of his is that he hugs his knees like in gym class when he sits down. [4]
  • Once, when the female talent who appears together with Riku asked for his contact address, he told her the office’s phone number instead. [5]
  • Before, when the Nanase family didn’t know that much about Riku’s illness, they tried as much as possible to keep chocolate away from him, since there were kids for whom chocolate could trigger an attack, too. So whenever Tenn received any, they would hide them, or take them from him, and that made Riku cry many times. Eventually, Riku gave up to the point that he didn’t even want to see chocolate anymore. [6]
  • When Sogo is with Riku, they’ll talk together, go out shopping together, or sometimes Sogo helps Riku with his housework. They’ve also watched TRIGGER DVDs together countless times. [7]
  • According to Iori, when Riku watches TRIGGER live DVDs, he will suspend it during Tenn's scenes alone, advance it a bit, and then repeat and watch it again. [8]
  • Riku has very low alcohol tolerance. He got drunk on Yamato’s image chocolates (during valentines) which had a little alcohol in it, and he seemed to be drunk on amazake too (during new years). Riku also got drunk off chanmery, which doesn't even have alcohol in it. [8][9]
  • Iori usually doesn’t hum songs. But there was once when he was standing in the kitchen, Riku started singing Fly away! while rummaging through the refrigerator, and at the place where it’s Iori’s part, Riku will fall silent. Iori then began to sing because he lost to the pressure of the silence. [5]
